About the Program

The Canadian College for Healthcare and Pharmaceutics offers a Micro-Credential on Intravenous Therapy program designed to educate healthcare professionals on the common practice of intravenous (IV) therapy. This program covers the purpose and efficiency of IV therapy in delivering fluids, nutrients, blood, or medications directly into a vein.

This program emphasizes safe and precise administration of IV therapy within the practitioner’s scope of practice. It draws from nursing and medical assisting experiences and assumes a basic understanding of sterile techniques, anatomy, pharmacology, and dosage calculations. The program also highlights the importance of legal and regulatory considerations.

Module 1: Introduction to Intravenous Therapy (4.5 hours)

Module 2: Review of Anatomy and Physiology (4.5 hours)

Module 3: Review of Asepsis and Infection Control in Intravenous Therapy (4.5 hours)

Module 4: Basic Equipment and Supplies for Intravenous Therapy (4.5 hours)

Module 5: Review of Dosage Calculations (4 hours)

Module 6: Foundation of Intravenous Therapy (4 hours)

Module 7: Pharmacology related to IV Therapy (4 hours)

Module 8: Starting an Intravenous Therapy (10 hours)

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

Provide accurate, up-to-date, and practical information and instruction in phlebotomy procedures and techniques

Provide a comprehensive background in phlebotomy theory and principles

In addition to blood collection skills, the student will demonstrate competence and professionalism for a successful specimen collection

Good communication and public relations skills

This course is appropriate for use as an instructional text or as a reference for those who wish to update their skills or study for certification

Working knowledge of the healthcare delivery system, and familiarity with clinical laboratory services.

Credential and Location

Course Details

Duration

39 Hours, Hybrid program of 39 hours in total.

Instructor-led MS teams sessions on six weekdays – 4:30pm-9pm (27 hours)

In-person – two weekend days (12 hours) from 10 am to 4 pm

Schedule: Eight days (Two weeks) once per month

Credential

Program participants receives the certificate of attendance and certificate of completion

This Micro-Credential program does not require approval under the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005.

Funding

The program at the Canadian College of Healthcare and Pharmaceutics is eligible for tax credits under the Canada Skills Credit program. The College also works with financial institutions including Windmill Mircrolending to arrange support for student loans.
