The micro-credential provides key information in a clear, concise manner for health professionals. It covers the following topics:
- Introduction to Intravenous Therapy
- Review of Anatomy and Physiology
- Review of Asepsis
- Basic Equipment and Supplies for Intravenous Therapy
- Review of Dosage Calculations
- Foundation of Intravenous Therapy
- Pharmacology related to IV Therapy
This program is based on live and online learning activities which include Knowledge-Based Learning Activities and Practice-Based Learning Activities. The program (live or online) classes are followed by in-person workshop and hands-on practice. Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Provide accurate, up-to-date, and practical information and instruction in phlebotomy procedures and techniques
- Provide a comprehensive background in phlebotomy theory and principles
- In addition to blood collection skills, the student will demonstrate competence and professionalism for a successful specimen collection
- Good communication and public relations skills
- This course is appropriate for use as an instructional text or as a reference for those who wish to update their skills or study for certification
- Working knowledge of the healthcare delivery system, and familiarity with clinical laboratory services.
Hybrid program of 39 hours in total.
- Instructor-led Zoom sessions on six weekdays – 4:30pm-9pm (27 hours)
- In-person – two Saturdays (12 hours) from 10 am to 4 pm
- Practicum course students practice the blood collection & handling skills learned in theory class
- Practice on simulation arms (mandatory) and live persons (based on volunteers availability)
- Receive instruction on how to o prepare the blood collection site
- Choose the proper collection tools
- Post-puncture care, processing and management of collected samples
The program at the Canadian College of Healthcare and Pharmaceutics is eligible for tax credits under the Canada Skills Credit program. The College also works with financial institutions including Windmill Mircrolending to arrange support for student loans.
