Clinical placements have become one of the biggest conversations in Canadian healthcare education and for good reason. As Canada works to address ongoing healthcare workforce shortages, experts are increasingly pointing to one challenge that often goes unnoticed: finding enough high-quality clinical placement opportunities for students. While many Canadians are aware of the need for more nurses, Personal Support Workers, and other healthcare professionals, fewer realize that graduating those future professionals depends on giving them meaningful opportunities to learn in real healthcare settings. It’s a reminder that healthcare education doesn’t end in the classroom, it truly comes to life through hands-on experience (read Canadian Health Workforce Education, Training and Distribution Study here)

Healthcare is a profession built on people, and there are some lessons that simply can’t be taught through textbooks or lectures alone. Whether you’re learning how to collect blood specimens as a phlebotomy technician, supporting a resident as a Personal Support Worker, or developing the confidence to communicate with patients and healthcare teams, these are skills that grow through experience. Clinical placements give students the chance to put their knowledge into practice, work alongside experienced professionals, and gain the confidence that only comes from caring for real patients in real environments.

At the Canadian College of Healthcare and Pharmaceutics, we believe that practical experience is one of the most valuable parts of a student’s education. That’s why we work hard to ensure our students have access to meaningful clinical placement opportunities in programs where hands-on learning is essential, including our Phlebotomy and Personal Support Worker (PSW) programs. We know that these placements are far more than a graduation requirement, they’re an opportunity for students to refine their skills, build professional confidence, and begin developing the relationships that can shape their future careers.

For many students, a clinical placement becomes their first introduction to the healthcare workplace they’ll soon call home. It’s where classroom learning transforms into clinical judgment, technical skills become second nature, and students discover what it truly means to care for others. It’s also where many employers meet their future team members. A positive placement experience can open doors to employment and help graduates transition into the workforce with confidence.

As Canada’s healthcare system continues to evolve, one thing remains clear to our team at CCHAP: preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals requires more than excellent instructors and modern classrooms. It requires strong partnerships with healthcare organizations and a commitment to providing meaningful real-world learning experiences. At the Canadian College of Healthcare and Pharmaceutics, we’re proud to make clinical education a priority because we know that when students receive exceptional hands-on training, everyone benefits.
