CCHAP’s NACC Early Childhood Assistant 2021 program prepares students to support early childhood educators in licensed childcare and early learning settings. Through classroom learning and supervised practicum, students develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to care for infants, toddlers, preschool, and school-age children in a safe, inclusive environment.

About the Program

The NACC Early Childhood Assistant program is a 1,000-hour vocational diploma approved under the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005. The curriculum covers child development, health and safety, communication, observation and guidance, play-based learning, inclusive practice, and professional ethics, along with a substantial practicum component in licensed childcare settings.

Students learn to support early childhood educators with daily routines, classroom preparation, documentation, and family communication while modelling positive behaviour and promoting children’s well-being. Training emphasizes professionalism, teamwork, time management, and adherence to fire, safety, and health regulations.

Career Opportunities

Graduates are prepared for entry-level positions as Early Childhood Assistants in child care centres, preschools, before-and-after school programs, and other early learning environments. Employers value ECAs who are friendly, enthusiastic, dependable, patient, respectful, and able to work effectively with children, families, and colleagues.

Typical responsibilities include helping implement daily activities, supervising children indoors and outdoors, supporting snacks and meals, assisting with toileting and hygiene, maintaining a safe environment, and contributing to documentation and communication with families under the guidance of Early Childhood Educators.

Eligibility

Who can take the Course

This program is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with children, are caring and patient, and want to start a career in early childhood education. Strong interpersonal skills, reliability, and a commitment to children’s safety and well-being are essential.

Applicants must meet the minimum admission requirements in Section 19 of O. Reg. 415/06:

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or

Be 18 years of age or older on or before the program start date and achieve a passing score on an approved qualifying test (for example, Wonderlic Scholastic Level Exam, minimum score 18).


If English is not the first language, proof of English language proficiency is required (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL iBT, CAEL, CELPIP, CLB tests, Duolingo, Pearson PTE Academic, NACC Written Entrance Exam, or evidence of prior post-secondary study in English). Additional requirements include a clear Vulnerable Sector Disclaimer and a Medical Disclaimer.

Duration
