Phlebotomy Certificate Program

About the Program

The Phlebotomy Certificate program is a stand-alone program to prepare for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician credential offered by the Canadian Phlebotomy Technician Group Inc. (CPTG). The CPT credential eligibility requires post-secondary studies in health sciences or work experience. This program is designed to fill the gaps for the candidates who will like to challenge the CPT exam . The program is also open to Internationally Educated Health Professionals. The CPT exam fees (one attempt) and the CPTG membership fees are included as part of the program admission.

Who Should take this Course

This program is designed for anyone planning to become a “Certified Phlebotomy Technician” with the following educational qualifications.

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (70% score or higher in English, Maths and Biology)

Post-secondary certificate or Diploma in Health Sciences (e.g., PSW Certificate)

Internationally Educated Health Professionals

Module 1: Standards of Practice & Ethics; Canadian Healthcare (1 day)

Module 2: Anatomy, Physiology & Medical Terminology (1 day)

Module 3: Asepsis, Infection Control and WHMIS (1 day)

Module 4: Phlebotomy – Basic (2 days including 1 day in-person)

Module 5: Phlebotomy – Procedure (3 days including 1 day in-person

Learning Outcomes

This program is based on live and online learning activities which include Knowledge-Based Learning Activities and Practice-Based Learning Activities. The program (live or online) classes are followed by in-person workshop and hands-on practice. Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

Provide accurate, up-to-date, and practical information and instruction in phlebotomy procedures and techniques

Provide a comprehensive background in phlebotomy theory and principles

In addition to blood collection skills, the student will demonstrate competence and professionalism for a successful specimen collection

Good communication and public relations skills

This course is appropriate for use as an instructional text or as a reference for those who wish to update their skills or study for certification

Working knowledge of the healthcare delivery system, and familiarity with clinical laboratory services.

Credential and Location

Course Details

Duration

Hybrid program of 39 hours in total. Eight days (Two weeks) once per month

In-person – two Saturdays (12 hours) from 10 am to 4 pm

Credential

Micro-Credential & successful exam will result in credential of “Certified Phlebotomy Technician”

This Micro-Credential program does not require approval under the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005.

For fees, please email info@.cchap.ca or call 416-233-7869. Funding and grants are available for eligible students. For domestic students, different funding and fees discounts are available.

Funding

The program at the Canadian College of Healthcare and Pharmaceutics is eligible for tax credits under the Canada Skills Credit program. The College also works with financial institutions including Windmill Mircrolending to arrange support for student loans.

Experience

Practicum Details

Practicum course students practice the blood collection & handling skills learned in theory class

Practice on simulation arms (mandatory) and live persons (based on volunteers availability)

Receive instruction on how to o prepare the blood collection site

Choose the proper collection tools

Post-puncture care, processing and management of collected samples
